Digital Filmmaking For Teens

with Michael Ryden

Suitable for ages 12-17

Sundays, February 17th- April 21st

12:00pm - 3:00pm
10 weeks

Students in this class will learn how to make a complete film from start to finish, including scriptwriting, performance, videography, lighting, sound engineering, special effects, and post-production.  This class is the perfect introduction to the skills needed for a career in the modern film and television industry!

Workshop schedule:

Week 1:
Michael will go over the overall summary of the program & participants will watch a few select videos on film production, including past project examples, then learn in-depth about video production equipment they will be using during the workshop.
Week 2:
Participants are put into groups. Each team will rotate on the equipment and learn advanced video production settings, filming, and green screening techniques.
Week 3:
Each team will be given a topic (or one can be suggested by the group). Groups will brainstorm and write scenes pertaining to the overall topic. Groups will also be given a minimum of one “special effects” item that they will include in their storytelling & filming.  When scenes are written, group rehearsals will begin.
Week 4-5:
Writing & rehearsal, getting scenes finalized before filming begins.
Week 6-9:
Filming.  Groups will get to perform and operate film equipment.
Week 10:
Final adjustments will be made to the production, including proper titling & credits.

Michael Ryden - Instructor

Michael Ryden got his start in the entertainment industry by training at the Chicago Actors Studio from 2001 to 2006.

Michael returns to CAS now as a teacher with a vast array of experience in the film industry; ranging from filming corporate commercials and promotional videos for fortune 500 companies such as Bosch, to a variety of music videos for recording artists signed to Atlantic Records, Menage Music, and Ultra Records.  He also composes original music, and is working on a new album.

As a teacher, Michael has more than six years experience as an independent teaching artist with Columbia College, working not only with adult students, but also kids and teens, teaching acting, digital filmmaking and special effects with an emphasis on green screen technology.  As a past student at the Chicago Actors Studio, Michael hopes to share his passion and talents for film making with the young actors here.
